Pita Bread From Scratch
INGREDIENTS
- 1 3/4 cup warm water 
- 2 tsp sugar 
- 3 tsp active yeast 
- 500g all purpose flour 
- 1.5 tsp salt 
METHOD
- mix the warm water (it should me slightly above body temperature) with the sugar and the yeast 
- set aside 10 minutes or until frothy 
- in a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt 
- pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and mix with your hand 
- knead for 5 minutes and form a ball with the dough 
- oil a clean mixing bowl and roll the ball of dough into it 
- cover the mixing bowl with a rag and set aside to rise for 20 minutes 
- once the dough has risen, punch it to deflate it 
- cut into 6 pieces (don’t worry if they are not the same exact size) 
- form balls with the 6 pieces 
- transfer on a baking sheet and cover with the rag 
- set aside and let rise for 15 minutes 
- sprinkle flour on a cutting board or clean counter 
- use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into a 1/4 inch thick disc 
- cook for about 1 minute per side (can be done on a stove top on high heat or on the bbq or fire) 
- best served immediately, but can be stored in a airtight container
